Delivering Bespoke Passenger Infrastructure for the West Midlands Metro Expansion
Trueform was appointed by Midland Metro Alliance (MMA) to design, manufacture and install 18 bespoke passenger waiting shelters as part of the Metro extension connecting Wednesbury to Brierley Hill.
The project forms a key element of one of the West Midlands’ most significant light rail infrastructure investments, helping to create a modern, accessible and passenger-focused tram network that supports future growth across the region.
The objective was to deliver a series of high-quality waiting environments that combined architectural design, passenger comfort and operational functionality, while aligning with MMA’s vision for a contemporary and distinctive tram network.
Collaborative Design and Engineering
The project commenced with an extensive design development phase, working closely with Midland Metro Alliance to refine and validate the shelter concept.
MMA had established clear aspirations for the aesthetics, materiality and overall passenger experience. Trueform’s design and engineering teams translated this vision into a fully engineered solution that satisfied both architectural and operational requirements.
Each shelter was structurally validated to comply with relevant British Standards and the specific demands of an outdoor light rail environment, ensuring long-term durability, safety and performance.
UK Manufacturing Excellence
Following design approval, all shelters were manufactured in-house at Trueform’s UK production facilities.
Comprehensive quality control procedures were implemented throughout the manufacturing process, including detailed trial assemblies and inspections to ensure every component met the highest standards of quality and precision.
The completed structures were then consolidated and delivered to site through a carefully coordinated logistics programme developed in partnership with the main contractor.
Complex Installation in an Operational Light Rail Environment
Installation works required careful planning and coordination to ensure safe and efficient delivery across multiple station locations.
Working within a live light rail environment presented unique operational and health and safety challenges. Trueform’s experienced project management team and installation operatives successfully coordinated all activities, ensuring that each site was prepared and ready prior to installation.
The result was the successful deployment of 18 large-format shelters across the route, delivered safely, efficiently and to programme.
Intelligent Passenger Facilities
Each shelter measures approximately 18.5 metres in length and has been designed to provide passengers with a safe, comfortable and technologically integrated waiting environment.
Key features include:
-
Bespoke timber seating
-
Integrated passenger information totems
-
Real-time passenger information displays
-
LED courtesy lighting
-
Public address systems
-
Passenger help points
-
Dedicated electrical equipment enclosures integrated within the shelter structure
The combination of passenger amenities and integrated technology helps create a future-ready transport environment that enhances accessibility, information provision and overall passenger confidence.
Engineering a Bespoke Solution
Although the shelters were designed around a common architectural concept, every installation required a unique engineering solution.
Each tram stop along the route featured varying gradients and platform levels, meaning every shelter had to be individually designed and manufactured to suit its specific location.
Through detailed site surveys, advanced engineering and meticulous attention to detail during design, manufacture and installation, Trueform successfully accommodated the unique requirements of every station while maintaining a consistent appearance across the network.
Creating Better Passenger Experiences
The completed shelters provide passengers with high-quality waiting environments that combine contemporary design, durability and integrated technology.
The project demonstrates Trueform’s ability to deliver complex transport infrastructure projects from concept through to installation, combining design expertise, engineering capability and UK manufacturing excellence to create infrastructure that improves the passenger experience across modern rail and light rail networks.
As transport authorities continue to invest in sustainable public transport, projects such as the Midland Metro Alliance extension highlight the important role that high-quality passenger infrastructure plays in creating attractive, accessible and successful transit systems.
